The American Psychiatric Association Foundation has awarded Family Houston a 2024 Award for Advancing Minority Mental Health. The award recognizes our innovative and supportive efforts to:
- Raise awareness in underserved minority communities about mental illness
- Increase access to quality mental health services for underserved minorities
- Improve the quality of care for underserved minorities
“We were among the first organizations in Houston to offer services to African Americans and hired our first Black counselor in 1942,” commented CEO Ken Sheirr. “The principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion are fundamental to our approach and are rooted in our history.”
In 2023, Family Houston provided mental health counseling to 2,546 Hispanic, African-American, Asian American, Native American, and Multiracial clients. Family Houston remains committed to raising awareness and increasing access to quality mental health services for underserved minority communities. We provide professional, confidential counseling for children and adults, individuals and families. Services are provided in English & Espanol. We accept all major insurance plans and offer a sliding-fee scale.
